TAFE Outreach programs are closely aligned to the Federal Social Inclusion Agenda ensuring NSW education is accessible to people who face barriers to learning including geographical and social isolation, language and cultural factors, financial hardship, lack of educational confidence, being unaware of opportunities to learn, a disability or family commitments.

Teacher Qualities

'Community and School Gardens' demanded a teacher with high level interpersonal and communication skills and expertise in cultural awareness. A strong community network, government and non government links to mainstream sections within TAFE were also seen as important attributes. The teacher, Penny, needed a thorough knowledge of VET pathways. Pedagogical expertise, skills in program design, horticulture and design and the ability to engage and motivate participants into sustainable learning pathways were all essential qualities for the teacher.
The teacher selected for this program is highly experienced educator skilled in the area of permaculture, design and working across sectors of the community. Penny heads Permaculture North and has a strong background in Social Inclusion identifying appropriate options and preparing learners for further study and employment. Her thorough knowledge of VET systems and extensive network across Northern Sydney Institute providing access to mainstream sections and support services are invaluable to the programs. Penny's access to external networks facilitates collaboration with both government and non government organisations which extends capability and capacity of the programs. She inspires dreams and her knowledge and understanding of alternative pathways to achieve careers provide real opportunites for students to realise their dreams. Her educational expertise and broad networks have culminated in the commencement of six community gardens in Northern Sydney Institute.
