Program

Processes, Content and Goals

The School and Community Gardens program has surpassed expectations. The program brought the local community together to build the garden of their dreams.
In 2009 Hornsby TAFE Outreach responded to requests from schools and local groups to assist them to design and develop sustainable food gardens. Through the processes of ongoing dialogue and negotiation with stakeholders at all levels a dynamic program was developed and delivered culminating in the development of four new community groups and community gardens:

  • North Epping Community Garden
  • Lane Cove Church Community Garden - Permapatch
  • Turramurra Community Garden - The Lookout
  • Hornsby Heights Public School Community Garden
  • Pittwater Community Garden
  • Housing Development Veranda Gardens

The program is delivered using the Vocational and Community engagement Statement of Attainment. The goals of the program were for participants to be engaged in vocational education and training, to participate in a learning environment and to be engaged with a community, thus increasing opportunities for community participation. Other goals outside the formal expectations are increased self esteem, greater creativity, public speaking skills and motivation to seek further study and work opportunities.
